VW Recommends

What is it about a Volkswagen?

So many people love Volkswagens, especially vintage models. What is it about VWs that creates such loyalty?

If you have ever owned any model, whether it be a bus, a bug, a fastback, notchback, ghia, etc., you know how much they grow on you. They are perhaps the easiest automobiles ever to work on and maintain. You can literally take one apart and put it back together with a simple set of metric wrenches.

Everyone needs a Volkswagen due to the simple fact that you can work on them. Furthermore, A restored or tricked out VW can get as much attention as a $40,000 luxury sedan/SUV. In fact, I believe that I have gotten more thumbs up, waves, and honks while driving then most luxury car owners get. My bug brings back the kid in people. I wish that people drove a particular model of automobile for the sole reason that it makes them happy.

When I wash or work on my baby, I do it for me. It gives me such a feeling of elation when I look at a mint car. I like keeping it up because I know that if I treat it well, then it will treat me the same in return. It is a bonus when people come up to me and applaud its condition. Volkswagen owners are notorious for talking to each other about their vehicles and helping each other out. Could it be that all it takes to unite the world is a VW in every driveway?

"It's an icon in pop culture," said Michael Marsden, a popular culture expert and professor of English and Cultural Studies at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.  People with the original VWs have a sense of Volkswagen camaraderie, like they are part of a secret club.  "V-Dubs look like nothing else," he said. "From far away, if you see a Honda Accord and a Toyota Camry, they look alike. When you see a VW, you know it."

Many companies are still in business making high-performance parts for the air-cooled Volkswagen;  an amazing number, in fact, given that no new cars have been sold in this country for going on twenty-five years now. But my favorite Volkswagen owners are the Herbie-heads: people who restore mid-sixties vintage VWs to look like Herbie from the Disney Love Bug movies!
